At 17:00 on June 30th 2044, Headmistress Katherine Dalton was attacked in her office by a Dementor. Unfortunately for her, the staff and students had already left for the summer holidays and nobody would be returning to the castle until they were over. Little had she been expecting to find an empty pocket when she reached for her wand.
At 08:00 on September 1st 2044, a representative of the Department of Magical Education came to the school to collect some important documents from Katherine that she was supposed to submit to the Ministry of Magic over the summer. Little had he been expecting to find the victim of a Dementor's Kiss.
At 11:00 on September 1st 2044, Katherine's deputy became the Headteacher of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Little had he been expecting to find himself placed in such an important position just hours before the students would be returning to the castle.
What's really interesting is what happened over a thousand years before this.
Some years prior to Salazar Slytherin's departure, the founders agreed that they would like to be able to continue helping the students of their school after their passing. Slytherin's suggestion of creating horcruxes was dismissed immediately. Rowena Ravenclaw's suggestion of turning the idea on it's head however was not. After a few months of hard work with Helga Hufflepuff, the two witches eventually found a solution. A horcrux was created by tearing the soul in two through an act of pure evil. Their 'anti-horcrux' would be created by almost replicating the soul through an act of pure love - founding Hogwarts. With the first step already in place, the founders cast an enchantment upon their portraits so that when they died, their consciousness would be moved into it until such a time that they were desperately required by Hogwarts and its inhabitants.
For many years they sat patiently in their frames, advising headteachers and the occasional student. Though there were mishaps from time to time, they were confident that the staff of the time would be able to overcome the problems, even if that meant telling them how to do so. When it came to the Second Wizarding War, the founders began to grow anxious. Only when the battle came to Hogwarts did they realise that they should have actioned their enchantments to help. The only problem now was that they were too late to save their castle from becoming a battlefield. After the battle was won, the founders agreed that they couldn't allow anything like it to happen again. The next time things started to go downhill, they would physically return to the castle and restore order.
